Using virtual vs. real account numbers on your invoices

Last updated: November 4, 2025

Context

When you send invoices through Meow, you may notice that the account number displayed on the invoice is different from your actual bank account number. This can cause confusion for both you and your customers, who may question whether the payment will reach the correct account.

Answer

The account number discrepancy you're seeing is expected and by design. Meow automatically generates a unique virtual account number for each invoice recipient. This is a security feature that provides two main benefits:

  • Security: Protects your sensitive primary account information from being exposed to customers

  • Payment tracking: Improves invoice reconciliation by allowing payments to be automatically tracked and matched to specific invoices

Important: Any payments sent to the virtual account number on your invoice will automatically route to your main checking account. The funds will settle into the same account you have configured in Meow.

The virtual account number is recipient-specific, meaning that all invoices sent to the same customer will display the same virtual account number. This ensures consistency for repeat customers.

Currently, this virtual account feature cannot be disabled - it's enabled by default for all Meow invoices to maintain security and improve payment processing.

If your customers have questions about the account number or if their bank flags the transfer due to the unfamiliar account number, you can assure them that this is a standard security feature and that payments will be processed correctly.
