When do payment approval requests expire?
Last updated: January 9, 2026
Payment approval requests in our system have an expiration time to ensure security and prevent unauthorized transactions. Understanding this expiration time is crucial for efficient payment processing.
You can view outstanding payment approval requests here.
Expiration Time
Payment approval requests expire at 4:00 AM Eastern Time (ET) the day after they are initiated. This means all payment requests have approximately 24 hours for approval, regardless of when they are submitted during the day.
If a payment is initiated on Monday at any time, it must be approved before 4:00 AM ET on Tuesday.
If a payment is initiated on Tuesday at any time, it must be approved before 4:00 AM ET on Wednesday.
Note: The expiration time is a system default and cannot be adjusted or customized.
Why do approval requests expire?
Expiration times are implemented as a security measure. They prevent approval requests from remaining active indefinitely, which could increase the risk of unauthorized approvals if an approver's account were to be compromised.
What happens if an approval request expires?
If an approval request expires, the payment will not be processed. In this case, the payment would need to be reinitiated, generating a new approval request.
Best practices
Initiate payments with enough time for approvers to review and approve before the 4:00 AM ET cutoff the following day.
Communicate clearly with your team about pending approvals, especially for time-sensitive payments.
Consider setting up internal reminders for approvers if you frequently have payments initiated late in the day.
