What is the difference between ACH and wire transfers, and when should I use each?

Last updated: April 10, 2026

Both ACH and wire transfers move money between bank accounts — but they work differently and are suited for different situations. On Meow, both are free. Here's how to choose.

When to use ACH

ACH is the better choice when:

  • You're paying employees (payroll)

  • You're making recurring or scheduled payments to vendors

  • The amount is relatively small and timing flexibility is acceptable

  • The recipient prefers ACH (common for domestic vendors and contractors)

Most payroll platforms, accounting tools, and recurring payment setups use ACH by default.

When to use a wire transfer

Wire transfers are the better choice when:

  • You need the money to arrive the same business day

  • You're sending a large payment (real estate, investment capital, large vendor payment)

  • The recipient is outside the U.S.

  • The transaction is time-sensitive and can't wait 1–3 business days

  • The receiving bank requires a wire

Is one safer than the other?

Both are secure, but they handle errors differently. ACH transfers can be disputed and reversed if something goes wrong — this makes them slightly more forgiving if you send to the wrong account. Wire transfers are generally final once sent, which is why it's critical to double-check recipient details before confirming. See What happens when I send a wire with incorrect account details? for more information.

Are there fees for either on Meow?

No. Meow charges zero fees for both ACH and wire transfers — domestic and international. This is one of the ways Meow differs from traditional banks, which often charge $15–$35 per wire.

How do I send each?

Both are available from the Move Money section of your Meow dashboard. See Understanding ACH and Wire Transfer Settlement Times for more detail on timing.
