What is an IMAD and how do I get one?

Last updated: April 10, 2026

IMAD is reference number used by the Federal Reserve's Fedwire system to uniquely identify wire transfers. Banks and their customers use them to trace, verify, or investigate wire payments.

IMAD — Input Message Accountability Data

The IMAD is the reference number assigned to a wire when it is sent. It's generated by the sending bank's Fedwire system and uniquely identifies the outgoing transaction.

IMADs are the most useful reference for tracing a wire, because they can be used by any bank in the payment chain to look up the transfer in the Federal Reserve's records.

Example IMAD format: 20260409MFP00030000901

Can Meow provide an IMAD for a wire I sent?

Yes. Meow can provide IMADs for outgoing wires. If you need an IMAD for a wire you sent, contact support at support@meow.com with the wire amount and date and we'll retrieve it for you. You can also find wire reference information in the transaction details within your Meow dashboard.

When would I need an IMAD?

You might need an IMAD when:

  • A wire you sent hasn't arrived and you need to trace it with the receiving bank

  • A receiving bank requests proof of a sent wire

  • You're working with a correspondent bank that needs a reference number to locate a payment
