How do I create API keys and test in the Meow sandbox?
Last updated: October 30, 2026
You create Meow API keys from the Developers section of your dashboard. Production and sandbox are separate environments, so each one needs its own key.
Create a production API key
Log in to app.meow.com and go to Developers.
Create a new API key and choose the scopes (permissions) the key needs, such as read access to accounts or write access to payments or cards. A key can only call endpoints its scopes allow.
Choose whether the key works for one business entity or for all the entities you're an Admin of. For keys with access to several entities, send the
x-entity-idheader to choose which entity each request is for.Save the key somewhere secure. You won't be able to see the full key again.
Some keys, such as keys with access to multiple entities, need approval from another admin before they become active. If your key shows as pending, ask a teammate to approve it in All approvals.
Limit what a key can do
Give each key only the scopes it needs. If you're connecting an AI agent or an automated workflow that sends payments, this matters even more. If you'd like a key limited to a single bank account, contact support and we'll help you set it up.
Use webhooks
Webhooks let Meow notify your system when something happens, such as an incoming payment.
Your key needs both the
webhooks:readandwebhooks:writescopes.Your webhook URL must be a public HTTPS address.
When you create a subscription, Meow returns a signing secret only once. Save it right away.
If you don't see the webhook scopes when creating a key, contact support. See the webhooks guide for full setup steps.
Test in the sandbox
The sandbox lets you build and test your integration without moving real money.
The sandbox dashboard is at app.sandbox.meow.com. Contact support to get an invite.
Sandbox API keys only work in the sandbox, and production keys only work in production. Using a production key in the sandbox returns a 403 Forbidden error.
The sandbox includes simulation tools to test incoming ACH and wire deposits.
Applications and data you create in the sandbox don't appear in your production dashboard.
Where can I find the API documentation?
Full documentation, including authentication, endpoints, and code samples, is at developer.meow.com.
